It's on! - Polls Open in 4 Days

On Thursday 12th December the people of Britain will vote for their representatives in the UK Parliament and in doing so will choose the Government which will lead this country for the next five years.

This vote provides a crucial opportunity to set the agenda about where we want to go as a country and the life we want for ourselves, our families, friends, neighbours and wider society.

The actions of the Conservative Governments of David Cameron, Theresa May and now Boris Johnson have demonstrated that the Tories remain a party of the privileged few, serving vested corporate interests at the expense of the rest of us.  The policy of austerity, increasing privatisation of our vital public services and the targeting of the most vulnerable with their hated Universal Credit are a shameful indictment of the Tories time in office since 2010.

It is also impossible to ignore the reason this election has been called.  The Conservatives repeated attempts to pass a Brexit deal which would destabilise the UK, which would be bad for businesses, which will put jobs at risk and which threatens the hard won rights of working people has left our country paralysed for the past three years.

A Labour government will negotiate a sensible deal within three months of being elected. It will be based on the things we always discussed and said were necessary with the EU and which are supported by trade unions and businesses. This includes a new customs union, a close single market relationship and guarantees of rights and protections.

Within six months of being elected, we will put that deal to a public vote, alongside remain. Two clear options, both agreed with the EU Ė no false promises or bluster. Labour will then carry out whatever the people decide.

The Tories are not the only threat to Scotland, the SNP currently have 35 MPs and whilst claiming to represent Scotland, they have pursued the politics of grievance and have contrived to create a 'them and us' mentality to foster ill-will against the rest of the UK. Most damagingly however, the SNP have ignored the settled will of the Scottish people by arrogantly pursuing a second divisive referendum on independence despite the firm decision in 2014 for Scotland to remain in partnership with the rest of the United Kingdom and repeated polls showing that majority of Scots do not want a second referendum.

We need a Labour government which will resolve Brexit, invest in our public services and which will take the decisions which will widen access and opportunity for everyone across the UK.

To achieve this we need to return as many Labour MPs as possible. Voting for the SNP not only paves the way to five more years of Conservative rule but weakens the bonds of the UK and risks the SNP foisting another bitter and divisive referendum on Scotland causing more uncertainty and greater risk for the economy and jobs.

Here in Renfrewshire we have selected two first-class candidates to contest Paisley and Renfrewshire North and Paisley and Renfrewshire South who are already campaigning every day to outline Labourís positive and fair vision for Britain and will be campaigning for every last vote. We are by no means complacent and know that voters expect more from politicians and political parties and believe we can rise and meet and exceed these expectations.

From this page you will be able to find out more about our local candidates and what Labourís policies will mean for ordinary people here in Renfrewshire.

Moira RamagePaisley and Renfrewshire South

Your Labour candidate for the General Election is Moira Ramage.

Moira says, "I know what it is like to live in a community where every day was a struggle. Where people had no money for bus fares, school uniforms and we lived day to day on what little we had. The Labour Party policies of my day gave me a free education and thanks to that I qualified as a lawyer. It also gave people the NHS, equal rights, equal pay, maternity pay and so much more. We are the only party that truly cares about jobs, equality and justice for the millions of people who today feel helpless and powerless.

Our community needs a fresh start. We need to work together to get the Tories out. They donít give a damn about you, me, the vulnerable or the elderly. Other parties may be well meaning but they canít form a government to get rid of the Tories. If you truly want them out you need to vote and vote Labour. That is the only vote that will make a difference and give us a fresh start."
